Matthew Filipovich graduated from the Department of Physics, Engineering Physics, and Astronomy at Queen’s University (Kingston, Canada) where he received his bachelor’s degree in engineering physics (2020) and master’s degree in applied physics (2022).

Matthew was supervised by Professor Bhavin Shastri during his master’s studies where he specialized in the field of neuromorphic photonics. His primary research project was the design and simulation of an integrated silicon photonic architecture for training deep neural networks. He also published an open-source computational electrodynamics package, called PyCharge, for simulating moving dipoles and point charges. Matthew is a recipient of the Vector Institute Scholarship in Artificial Intelligence and the NSERC Canada Graduate Scholarship.

Matthew will begin his research on the AppQInfo project “All-optical training of artificial neural networks” on 1 May 2022. He will be a member of the Quantum and Optical Technology research group in the department of Atomic and Laser Physics at the University of Oxford under the supervision of Professor Alex Lvovsky. The goal of the research project is to experimentally demonstrate an all-optical implementation of the backpropagation algorithm for training deep neural networks.

Matthew’s primary research interests are in computational physics, photonics, quantum computing, and machine learning. During his final year of undergraduate studies, Matthew was the technical captain of the Queen’s Hyperloop Design Team and competed at the annual SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition in Hawthorne, California. In his spare time, Matthew enjoys cycling, bouldering, and travel.
